Feeling different after 40? It could be changes in testosterone affecting how you feel.

Did you know testosterone levels can decline with age, with some men experiencing up to a 50% drop between their 20s and 40s*? Research suggests levels may decrease by around 2-3% a year from age 30.

For some men, this can affect energy, mood, confidence, body composition and sex drive, leaving them feeling less like themselves. It could be andropause.

Take our Men's Health Checker to explore further.

Testosterone can gradually decline with age

  What is andropause?

Andropause, sometimes called the ‘male menopause’, refers to the gradual decline in testosterone levels that can occur as men get older. Testosterone belongs to a group of male sex hormones known as androgens.

Andropause symptoms can be subtle and difficult to recognise, meaning some men may overlook these changes or put them down to ageing, making them less likely to seek support.

Unlike menopause, testosterone decline linked to andropause does not normally fall suddenly at a particular age. Some research suggests that bioavailable testosterone, the amount readily available for the body to use, may decline by around 2-3% a year from about age 30, although levels and patterns of change vary from person to person.

 Signs of andropause

Andropause can lead to a myriad of signs, affecting men both physically and emotionally.

The severity and onset of these experiences will vary widely but may include:

  • Decreased libido and erectile dysfunction
  • Weight gain, particularly around the abdomen
  • Reduced muscle mass and feelings of physical weakness
  • Joint pain and discomfort
  • Sleep disturbances, including insomnia and night sweats
  • Mood swings, irritability, and depression
  • Cognitive changes, such as difficulty concentrating and memory lapses
  • Reduced bone density, increasing the risk of fractures
  • Hair thinning and loss
  • Needing to urinate more frequently, and more urgently

Frequently Asked Questions

Is andropause the same as male menopause?

Not exactly. The term “male menopause” can be misleading because testosterone does not normally fall suddenly at a particular age in the same way that hormone levels change during menopause.

“Andropause” is a term sometimes used to describe physical and emotional changes that some people experience as they get older, but experiences can vary. Learn more about andropause.

Do these changes mean I have low testosterone?

Not necessarily. Changes in energy, sleep, mood, concentration, muscle mass or sexual function can have several possible causes. These may include stress, sleep, lifestyle, medication and wider physical or mental health factors, as well as possible hormonal changes. Explore our guidance on testosterone and men’s health.
